Boats and Bridges
We had a lot of fun testing the boats that were built entirely of aluminum foil. Congratulations to the four designers whose boats held all 140 marbles!

We enjoyed a visit from the Volunteer Fire Department and Smokey the Bear. The information we review every year will hopefully not be needed in a real-life situation, but students know it is important. We are grateful to have our local firemen help make fire safety a priority at Rivercrest Elementary.

RIVERCREST ELEMENTARY BOOK FAIR INFORMATION
NOVEMBER 8TH-12TH (MONDAY-FRIDAY)
“READING SAVES THE DAY!”
The book fair will be all week and the students will be coming during their regularly scheduled library times.
OUR LIBRARY TIME IS THURSDAY 1:00-1:30.
Parents and relatives/friends of students are also allowed to come during the scheduled times if they would like to look with their child/children.
Visitors will also be allowed to come and purchase books on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00-12:00.
Friday will be open for visitors ALL DAY (FROM 8:00-3:30).
The second six weeks will end this Friday, October 29th. We will have our AR Popcorn/Movie party on Monday since we’re having a Halloween celebration this Friday. In order to participate in the AR party, a student must have an average score of at least 80 and at least 10 points. Students may bring drinks from home.
Third graders are encouraged to participate in the A.M. Aikin Reading Program this year. Students are required to read and score at least 80% on AR tests for the following types of books…5 Fiction, 2 Biographies, 1 American History, 1 Texas History, and 1 Other Nonfiction. Our class has been working really hard to have everyone complete the program by the end of October. We are over halfway there! Parents, please ask your children about their progress toward meeting this goal. Students who achieve this honor will be treated to a trip to Paris Junior College to the A.M. Aikin Archives, lunch at CiCi’s Pizza, and an afternoon at the park in the spring. While students have until then to complete the requirements, we get VERY busy after Christmas and students can easily run out of time.
On Friday, October 29th, we will have a Halloween Celebration. We will watch Casper and eat popcorn. Students are invited to bring a drink of their own along with any other personal snacks they would like. Since this is not an “official” party day, we are not allowed to bring snacks to share with others, though.

After reading about James Eads’s famous bridge, we practiced building our own bridges using only a piece of paper. It took a few attempts (and a hint or two), but we were able to make bridges strong enough to support our pencils.
